OUR STORY

One Small Family, Making Small Changes

In 2019, Cody and Caitlin decided to purchase our own little place and do what we could to make it our own. Caitlin grew up in agricultural communities, and has a deep passion for the intersection of food and the environment. Cody spent his youth in 4-H programs. Armed with the power of Google, Youtube, and a little bit of family knowledge, the couple set our to start localizing their food networks. Then, 2020 happened and everything was entirely shaken up. First, they acquired rabbits. Then came the quail. And of course, what's a homestead without an ambitious garden? Since 2019, Caitlin has been dreaming and Cody has been hard at work making those dreams come true. In late 2022, they welcomed their first child to the adventure. In the last 4 years, we have learned a lot - some good, some bad. We believe in passing on the good, hopefully preventing you from experiencing the same bad we have, and of course, growing in love.

ABOUT OUR ANIMALS

You probably think of bunnies as cute, cuddly creatures that have a lot of babies. And while some people keep rabbits as pets, others breed them for their meat and fur. Here on our little farm, we do a little of both. We raise two types of dual purpose rabbits: New Zealands and Silver Foxes. New Zealands were one of the most popular production breeds in the U.S. for many years, and they are still incredibly popular among all rabbit enthusiasts. Silver Foxes are a heritage breed that used to be popular but is now in conservation status. By choosing two different breeds, we are able to have a variety of colors, and we never run out of breeding projects!

While many people in the past grew up hunting bobwhite quail, the quail we raise here on the farm are not native to the U.S. Instead, our birds are a domesticated bird that originated in Asia. We have several breeding projects at all times. We raise jumbo quail for their meat and have a celadon breeding project for their lovely blue eggs. Trust us, you haven't lived until you've tried a pickled quail egg!

ABOUT OUR PRODUCE

While we are not a licensed organic farm, we believe in producing fruits and vegetables as close to naturally as we possibly can. Thus, we limit chemicals and try to source all our fertilizer from our own system. Caitlin works in a soil lab and is passionate about maintaining a healthy, thriving soil microbiome complete with minerals, beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, and insect life. We even offer our rabbit fertilizer for your own gardening efforts!
